This off-highway, rear dump truck had a 35-ton capacity and brought the Cat name into the construction and quarry industries. It was this machine, built 60 years ago, that began Cat’s journey to becoming one of the biggest names in heavy machinery.

THE CAT 769 WAS INTRODUCED IN 1962
Before the Cat 769 was introduced, there were four pilot designs tested throughout the late 1950s. After the formula for a haul truck with superior performance was found, the Cat 769 was introduced in 1962 with the first units being commercially produced in January 1963. The first Cat 769 was shipped from the factory on May 28, 1963 — and the rest is history.
IT BEAT OUT THE COMPETITION IN PERFORMANCE
It became apparent very quickly that the Cat 769 was able to easily outperform other haul trucks in its class. With a faster return, better weight-to-horsepower ratio, and lower cost per ton, the Cat 769 was a machine that could maximize workflow and efficiency at quarries and construction sites. For those who relied on heavy equipment like haul trucks to run their business, the Cat name quickly became the industry standard.
IT PROVIDED A SMOOTHER RIDE AND BETTER USER EXPERIENCE
Not only did the Cat 769 boast better performance in a number of categories, but it also provided the user with a smoother, more comfortable ride. For those working long days in quarries and construction sites, the Cat 769 delivered in every way. The smoother ride was due to an innovative pneumatic-oil suspension system in which compressed air was used to dissipate impact on the truck’s frame. This gave the user a much smoother ride and also extended the life of the frame.
CATERPILLAR CONTINUED TO IMPROVE UPON THE 769
The Cat 769 set the stage for the line of off-road haul trucks offered today by Caterpillar. In 1962, the Cat 769 was powered by Cat D343 diesel engines with 375 flywheel-horsepower. With several improvements over the years, by 1966, this same haul truck featured 415 flywheel-horsepower, along with other impressive upgrades.
While the Cat 769 is a machine of the past (stopping production of the 769D in 2007), its legacy allowed Cat to continuously improve and engineer better off-road haul trucks. Today, we have the Cat 770G, one of the most popular and reliable haul trucks available.
