Draglines are used heavily in mining and in civil engineering. This piece of heavy equipment consists of a large bucket suspended from a boom by ropes. The bucket is then “dragged” (hence the name), picking up materials along the way. In civil engineering applications, you will see this used for road or port construction or for pond and canal dredging. In mining, a dragline is used to remove overburden from mines and surface materials, such as sand.
