EXCAVATORS

An excavator, whether you have a small, medium, or large excavator, is one of the most essential pieces of construction equipment you can have. These machines do effortlessly what it previously took dozens of men to do — they dig.

Wagner Equipment, as a Cat dealer, offers a small mini excavator that weighs just over 2,000 pounds to our Cat 6090, which weighs over 2 million pounds, has 4500 hp, and a bucket that is as large as 52 meters. If you picture an articulated arm with a bucket that scoops, you’ll have a good idea of an excavator.

An excavator is used in many industries besides construction, from coal mining and demolition to trenching and oil and gas. You’ll see these pieces of heavy equipment dredging rivers, in general landscaping use, in snow removal, and in forestry work. Excavators powered by steam have been around since 1796, and the idea to use hydraulics for digging first made it to the excavator in the 1880s. Since then technology has made this construction equipment a force to be reckoned with. Contact Wagner Equipment Co for more information.

BULLDOZER

A bulldozer goes well on a construction job site. After you dig up a hole with your excavator, you have to be able to move the dirt. This is where a bulldozer comes in. It’s a piece of heavy equipment with a metal plate on the front that is used as a blade that pushes dirt, soil, rubber, trash, and other materials.

The idea of the first bulldozer is much newer compared to its excavator cousin. Invented only one hundred years ago in 1923, it was the brainchild of a farmer who attached a blade to his tractor so he could plough up fields easier. These pieces of heavy equipment are ubiquitous across all industries, from agriculture and rock quarries to the military and construction. Bulldozers get their names from a common colloquial saying of the past, “to bull-dose,” which meant to apply a lot of medicine or punishment. This term evolved to mean to get your way by pushing through obstacles, where it was changed and applied to this piece of heavy equipment.

BACKHOE

A backhoe is one of the most popular pieces of heavy equipment rentals we offer for construction projects. If you picture an excavator and a bulldozer that merged, you’d get a backhoe. A backhoe is a piece of construction equipment that features an articulated arm with a bucket like an excavator on the back end that is mounted to the back of a tractor that has a front loader, or a blade like bulldozer. The name backhoe refers to the way the bucket draws earth back towards it rather than shoveling it forward, not to any direction.

Backhoe loaders come in various sizes and are hugely popular as construction equipment because they can be used to accomplish most small to medium-sized construction jobs. With a wide variety of attachments available for the backhoe loader, this machine is capable of most tasks that you perform as a construction business. These construction equipment machines were first produced in the 1950s and quickly grew in popularity. They are used for paving roads, breaking up asphalt, digging holes, excavating, transporting building materials, excavating, landscaping, and more. Contact Wagner Equipment Co to learn more.

telehandler

TELEHANDLER

Telehandlers are nifty little pieces of construction equipment when you need them in a pinch — literally. If you picture a forklift with an arm, you’ll have a telehandler, or a telescopic handler. These construction equipment machines can be used with a variety of attachments that allow for picking up objects from the ground and moving them up to either a tall building for construction projects or to dump material in a waiting pickup truck. They are used to hand up roofing materials or to reach upper level floors. They can grasp heavy items and move them easily.

The telehandler is used quite frequently by farmers to move hay bales, used by various industries to offload heavy pallets, used on construction job sites for clean-up duties, and can be used to plough snow. They can also function as a crane, making them popular amongst waste removal and recycling companies. Telehandlers are also used to lift employees off the ground to an elevated position since platforms can be attached. You’ll see utility workers using them to replace lightbulbs in street lamps or you’ll see a painting company use them for their painters to reach higher levels of homes and businesses. Most telehandlers are small to medium-sized, making them great for small areas and construction job sites. They are compact and can get into areas many forklifts cannot. SKID STEER LOADER

Another piece of construction equipment invented in the 1950s, the skid steer is known for its maneuverability, which makes it an invaluable addition to most construction companies. A skid steer is similar to a bulldozer except it is mounted on four wheels or on two tracks. The front and back axles are locked so they can move in synchronized movements, but they can still be operated separately from the wheels on the opposite side. The fact that the skid steer turns by having the wheels skid or drag across the ground as the wheels on one side increase in speed is how this piece of construction equipment got its name.

The advantage of the skid steer is its compact size, yet its ability to do a lot of the jobs that a backhoe, excavator, and a bulldozer do. They are particularly useful for digging underneath structures, and with the available attachments, this is a powerhouse of a construction machine. You’ll see skid steers being used to clear snow, excavate, landscape, trench, and dig. Skid steers are relatively light, which makes for easy transport to and from job sites. The larger skid steers are popular for demolition work.

Wagner Equipment Co offers the best heavy equipment rentals. Combined with our stellar maintenance and service department as well as our Cat store, we’ve got your needs covered.
